Memorial stones commemorating the martyrs who died in the struggle against colonial rule in 1959, the current president of this country, Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera Ayala, laid wreaths at the memorial site in Manda and the cemetery of the martyrs in Nkhata Bay district.
On March 3, 1959, thirty-three martyrs, including one woman, bravely stood up and resisted the colonial rule of this country under the leadership of chiefs and DC administrator John Block in Nkhata-Bay.
During his reign and in his territory, Block commanded his army to attack and capture various Malawian villages along Lake Malawi using a warship and killed 31 Malawians who resisted his rule.
Second in command of this country, Saulos Klaus Chilima, Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara, Richard Chimwendo Banda, Ken Zikhale Ng'oma, Brown Mpinganjira, Kenzie Msukwa, Kondwani Nankhumwa, Symon Vuwa Kaunda, and Khumbo Kachali are some of those present.
