The decision was made during MCP's Central Executive Committee meeting in Lilongwe on Monday, where they endorsed Chakwera as their candidate for the 2025 elections. This choice aligns with the Tonse Alliance agreement, which stipulates that Chakwera will serve as the torchbearer for the first five years of the 10-year pact, with Chilima taking over for the subsequent five-year term.
During a campaign rally in 2020 at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre, Chilima publicly confirmed the agreement, stating that Chakwera would lead initially and he would assume the role after five years.
Chakwera has consistently emphasized his commitment to upholding the agreement, accusing unspecified politicians of attempting to undermine his partnership with the Vice President. He reiterated his dedication to integrity in politics during a recent rally in Lilongwe, vowing to uphold honesty in his leadership.
The Tonse Alliance document outlines a 10-year partnership, with planned reviews throughout the duration. Chakwera and Chilima were brought together by various groups, including clergy members, to join forces for the 2020 elections with the aim of securing the necessary majority votes to defeat former President Peter Mutharika
