Political Drama Unfolds as Malawi's Tonse Alliance Faces Internal Rifts Ahead of 2025 Elections

In a surprising turn of events, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has named President Lazarus Chakwera as their nominee for the running mate position in the upcoming 2025 General elections, supporting the Torchbearer of the Tonse Alliance, Vice President Saulos Chilima.

The decision was made during MCP's Central Executive Committee meeting in Lilongwe, where they selected Chakwera as their candidate for the 2025 elections. This nomination contradicts the terms of the Tonse Alliance agreement, which stipulates that Chilima would be the torchbearer for the 2025 elections after Chakwera's first five-year representation.

During a campaign rally in 2020, Chilima had announced to the public their agreement that Chakwera would take the lead initially, with him assuming the torchbearer role after five years. Despite this agreement, recent developments indicate friction within the Alliance, with Chakwera expressing his commitment to honoring his word and not succumbing to political gamesmanship.

The Tonse Alliance document states that the relationship will be reassessed after a decade, raising questions about the current discord between the partners. Chakwera and Chilima, originally united to challenge former President Peter Mutharika in the 2020 elections, are now embroiled in a public disagreement over the leadership succession within the Alliance.

As tensions mount and alliances are tested, Malawi braces for a potentially turbulent political landscape leading up to the 2025 elections.
