The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government has come under fire following remarks by the party's leader at the Mary Navicha Law Chambers, stating that there is no compassion in assisting individuals affected by the recent flood disasters in the country.
Addressing individuals affected by flooding in Nkhotakota, Navicha expressed concern over the lack of urgency in providing aid to those in need of water assistance, emphasizing the absence of any government official offering aid to the affected populace.
"This is not the time for complacency in offices. Officials should rise and provide assistance to those affected by the flooding in this region," Navicha reiterated.
However, the government's spokesperson, Moses Kunkuyu, justified the handling of the flood crisis by the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), which falls under the purview of the country's president's office, working in conjunction with the military to distribute food aid to the affected individuals.
Kunkuyu expressed frustration, "When will people stop questioning the government's actions?"
In response, the Secretary of the Treasury, Wongani Mkandawire, defended the distribution of food aid to those affected by the flooding, stating that the government is grappling with the challenge of rising water levels, leading to the destruction of infrastructure and resulting in a spike in waterborne diseases affecting over 9,000 individuals in the country.
