Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Raises Concerns Over High Court Delay in Leader of Opposition Ruling

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has expressed apprehension regarding the prolonged delay by the High Court in reaching a decision on the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, following the party's motion to lift an injunction secured by Kondwani Nankhumwa against the party.

Namalomba, speaking on behalf of the party, expressed disappointment over the inconsistency between the promised urgency by the High Court Judge and the current three-week delay in addressing the matter.

Michael Kaiyatsa, Vice Chairperson of the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC), emphasized the potential for increased disorder within parliament and the DPP if the court does not expedite its ruling.

The ongoing delay is expected to further complicate the status of the Leader of the Opposition in parliament, as the DPP backs Mary Navicha, appointed subsequent to the injunction against George Chaponda, while the Speaker continues to recognize Kondwani Nankhumwa.

Adding to the concerns, the Catholic Bishops, in their recent Pastoral letter titled “The Sad Story of Malawi”, criticized the judiciary for inefficiency in case handling, citing delays that hinder justice delivery processes.
