"Nigeria's ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has accused the opposition of instigating protests over the rising cost of living for political reasons.Social media platforms have been flooded with videos of protests in the northern Nigerian cities of Minna and Kano.
APC spokesman Felix Morka said in a statement that the protests in these northern states were "organized to incite unrest and destabilize the government." He also accused the opposition of being behind the protests.
"People have taken to the streets to protest the rising cost of living, blocking major roads and causing disruptions. They are demanding government assistance to ease their suffering.
The cost of living in Nigeria has skyrocketed in the last eight months, with food prices and transportation costs leading the way. Over 46% of the country's 200 million people live in poverty.According to Nigeria's National Bureau of Statistics, consumer inflation reached a 27-year high in December, rising to 28.92% year-on-year, up from 28.20% in November.
"Morka, however, disagreed with the opposition leader's assessment of the economic situation. He described the economic reforms currently underway as "temporary pains" that are necessary for the country's long-term economic health. He called on the public to support the government during this difficult period, and expressed confidence that the reforms will ultimately lead to a better standard of living for all Nigerians.
It is worth noting that President Tinubu took office in May 2023, and has been implementing a series of economic reforms that he believes are necessary to improve the country's economy.
