"Historic Moment: Mary Thom Navitcha Becomes First Female Leader of Opposition in Parliament"

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has chosen Mary Thom Navitcha as the new Leader of Opposition in Parliament, replacing George Chaponda.

Navitcha, a dedicated member of the DPP and representative for the Thyolo Thava constituency, will make history as the first female leader of opposition in the parliamentary discussions.

This decision was made amidst a power struggle between Kondwani Nankhumwa and George Chaponda, both vying for the same position. Nankhumwa has been contesting his removal from the role of Leader of Opposition in Parliament.

Recently both Chaponda and Nankhumwa attended a meeting of the business committee at Parliament. The purpose of the gathering was to prepare for the upcoming 50th parliamentary session, scheduled to commence on Friday, February 9th, 2024. During this session, President Lazarus Chakwera will deliver the opening address for the budget session.

Interestingly, on Wednesday, Kondwani Nankhumwa, who was expelled from the DPP, attended the Business Committee as the leader of the opposition. In contrast, Chaponda was instructed to leave by the Speaker of Parliament, Catherine Gotani Hara.
